NOT Going Back To School Picnic

September has arrived, which means it is time to kick-off another great year with Grassroots Homeschoolers. As is tradition, we will start the new homeschooling year with our annual NOT Back To School Picnic on Wednesday, September 4th.

The picnic will be held at Frankfort’s Commissioners Park, located at 22108 S. 80th Ave. We will meet at the pavilion at 11:00 AM. Commissioners Park offers a great place play, with indoor restrooms.

The picnic is open to all families interested in learning more about our cooperative, and homeschooling in general. We will use some of our time, to plan upcoming Gathering Day Activities, as well as discuss possible field-trip ideas. Please come ready with your visions for the coming year, and what you would like to volunteer for. Also please share your ideas on how we can incorporate your family’s special interests in gathering day activities and/or outings. Grassroots is truly a grassroots organization: the more volunteers we have the more fun and education we can provide.

We look forward to catching up with our friends from last year, and making new friends this year. Our next gathering day will be on Wednesday, September 18th, at St. Paul’s church.

Grassroots Homeschoolers’ Gathering Day Guidelines

   Grassroots Homeschoolers’ Gathering Day Guidelines

Arrival & General Rules:

Read and review these Gathering Day Rules with your children at home and at the Welcome Table upon arrival.

Park in the back lot of the Church and enter through the Gym doors located through the fenced in play yard.

Doors to the Gym Open at 11:30am.

All members and visitors check in at the Welcome Table.

Members pay a $3 facility fee for each Gathering Day.

Visitors are required to fill out a visitor’s form and pay a $12 visitors fee.

Member’s Grandparents and spouses are always free.

The Welcome table will close at the start of our Gathering Day programs.

Please be sure to complete any business prior to its close!

Wear a name-tag (available at the Welcome table) and have your children wear them too. It makes it easier for us all to get to know each other and helps visitors and new members feel welcome.

Post Items of Interest on the bulletin board and submit them to the newsletter editors.

All are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy while visiting and making new friends before the scheduled Program.

Set-up a table and chairs for your family, or make arrangements to share this responsibility with friends.

Please clean up any mess you make and throw away all lunch debris.

Children are NOT allowed in the Hallways, supply rooms, or kitchen unless authorized and attended by an adult.

Parents/Guardians must remain on the premises with their children at all times.

Programming Rules:

Because our Gathering Days are held in a gym, the noise levels can seem chaotic at times. Please remind your children that work is being conducted in the Church Offices and we must keep our noise levels to a minimum.

Once the call for announcements begins, Parents must gather their families and participate or sit with them until the end of the scheduled program. If your child is not interested in the day’s activities/program, they are welcome to gather at the opposite end of the gym and play quietly until the activity/program has ended.

Children may play in the backyard area under close adult supervision, only when the St. Paul Preschool children are not occupying the space. Use of the playground equipment is prohibited.

All families are encouraged to help with any clean up needed after the program is complete.

Use of the Gym floor is permitted only after all Gathering Day Programs are complete.

Use of any St. Paul’s gym equipment is prohibited. Please bring your own gym balls or use the equipment proved by our group.

At the Close of the Program, or sooner if you will be leaving early, please take down and put away your families table and chairs, or make arrangements to share this responsibility with a friend.

About Grassroots Homeschoolers

Grassroots is open to anyone with an interest in homeschooling. Based in Matteson, Illinois, we are a non-denominational, nonsectarian, registered non-profit organization. Our purpose is to support and nurture homeschooling families. We provide a social network of growth and camaraderie as well as practical information to our community members and all others who are either actively involved in homeschooling or considering embarking on the homeschooling adventure.

We are a diverse group with members spread across the entire Chicago Southland region. Participants range in age from pre-K all the way up through high school, and we even have a few baby brothers and sisters who join in the fun. Grassroots is a family-friendly organization.

Our gathering days are the first and third Wednesday of each month. From September to May, Grassroots meets in the gymnasium at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 6201 Vollmer Road, Matteson, IL 60443. The church is located on the south side of Vollmer Road, approximately 3/4 miles west of Interstate 57, and parking is available in the back lot. The south entrance to the gymnasium is open by 11:30am on each gathering day.

Each time that we meet, we offer an educational and entertaining program. From guest speakers and parents sharing their expertise to a science fair and holiday parties, Grassroots strives to engage children at their levels while still challenging them to greet and embrace new ideas.

The gathering day also gives parents a chance to talk with one other, to seek out support and information, and build friendships with other homeschooling families.

For more information regarding Gathering Days, please see: Grassroots Homeschoolers Gathering Day Guidelines.

Grassroots membership dues are $60 annually. These membership fees go toward bringing in guest speakers, craft supplies, and holiday parties. They also fund our newsletter. Published monthly, it features detailed information on gathering day programs, events, and field trips.

Volunteers are what make a group successful. Therefore, we have a participation policy. We ask that all parents who are able donate some of their time to enriching the Grassroots experience, whether through leading a craft session, giving a gathering day presentation, or volunteering time behind the scenes to ensure that Grassroots can continue offering the kinds of opportunities and experiences that our children need and desire.

Members are also encouraged to plan field trips or other activities outside of our gathering days. Check with your local museums, parks, and libraries – with advance scheduling, homeschooling groups often enjoy special discounts or free admissions.

Grassroots is truly a grassroots organization: the more volunteers we have the more fun and education we can provide.
If you think you might be interested in joining us but would like to try us out first, we always welcome visitors. There is a $12 visitor fee per day per family.

You may also download the Grassroots_Enrollment_Form and Grassroots_Release_Form. Complete both forms and bring them to a Gathering Day.

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming Gathering Day!
